From 21 to 23 May the Heinrich Heine-University in Düsseldorf in cooperation with the Kunststiftung NRW (Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia) will organize Sprachwandeln – Düsseldorfer Tage zur Kunst des Übersetzens (‘Language Walking – The Düsseldorf Days of the Art of Translating’). Activities include discussions, readings, documentaries, material from the archives and an unusual translating competition where the audience is invited to experience literary translation as art-form. Initiators are Dr Vera Elisabeth Gehrling from the Literary Translation sector of the Heinrich-Heine-Institute.
An interesting innovation is the public competition for a grant to young literary translators on Friday, 23 May, 1-5 p.m. Four selected candidates will present their translation projects before an audience and a jury. This will call for a unusual talent in literary translation, the self-promotion of the translator.
