To mark the European Day of Languages, representatives of the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commisson, together with the Association of German Translators of Literary and Scientific works (VdÜ) and Weltlesebühne (http://www NULL.weltlesebuehne NULL.de/) are organising a symposium on 19 September 2014 in Berlin.
The symposium will focus on the translation of literary works as the most complex form of translation. In three panel discussions various questions and aspects of the profession of literary translators will be discussed, such as education and further training, appreciation of the profession of literary translator, the need for radical changes, the limits of literary translation, and coping with seemingly untranslatable cultural divergencies.
Under the heading of ‘Orality in translation’ the event will be closed with a reading performance by members of Weltlesebühne. Mr Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel, translator and chairman of VdÜ will moderate the event.
