Counterpoint
Counterpoint is an e-zine for everyone interested in literary translation. Whether you are a translator, publisher, agent, researcher, student or journalist, or just have a general interest in literature across borders, the European book market, and in the people that shape both, there will be something in Counterpoint of interest to you.
We report on what’s going on inside CEATL, and we look outside as well. We present feature articles about translators and translating and deal with the broad cultural, artistic and economic context of our work. We intend Counterpoint to live up to its name and be a place where independent and sometimes contrasting voices come together and form a stronger and more enthralling whole, much like the art of literary translation itself.
Counterpoint is free of charge and published twice a year in English and French.
This month we present…
MATA, our Macedonian member association
This month we would like to present to you the relatively young and positively vibrant Macedonian Association of Translators and Interpreters. Founded in 2010 by ten seasoned translators and interpreters, MATA fights for better working conditions and continuing professional development for its members, while fostering cooperation, networking, and socializing.
November was a busy month for MATA! Its 12th Annual Conference took place on 16 November, and it focused on two general topics: the impact of technology on translation and interpreting, and dealing with internationalisms in translation.
Just two weeks later, MATA held the award ceremony for the updated Babylon MATA award for the best young translator: besides the monetary prize and a one-year membership in MATA, the winners have their work—a short or an excerpt from a longer prose piece—published in the Kulturen život magazine, which for most winners is their first ever published translation.
The end of November also saw the start of a new cycle of MATA’s mentorship programme, in which experienced members volunteer their time to mentor translation and interpreting students for a semester. Ending the year on a fun note, MATA is organizing a pre-New Year’s karaoke bash of 16 December, so if you happen to be in Skopje, you can join them and sing along!
