19 Feb, 2025

CEATL has been selected for participating in the Consultation (https://digital-strategy NULL.ec NULL.europa NULL.eu/en/news/kick-plenary-general-purpose-ai-code-practice-took-place-online) (sept. 2024-April 2025) launched by the DG for Communications Networks, Content & Technology (CNECT) of the European Commission for the draft (https://digital-strategy NULL.ec NULL.europa NULL.eu/en/library/second-draft-general-purpose-ai-code-practice-published-written-independent-experts) of the AI Code of Practice that will detail the AI Act rules for providers of general-purpose AI models and general-purpose AI models with systemic risks.

15 representative organisations of authors and performers sent a joint letter to EU Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and Commissionner Micallef about the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. The letter expresses their concerns about the second draft of the Code of Practice and urges the EU to encourage the development of a responsible AI industry that respects our authors’ and performers’ intellectual property rights.

The letter prompted an article in The Guardian, in which CEATL is quoted:

The European Council of Literary Translators’ Associations, which represents 10,000 translators in 28 countries, said it was very concerned about copyright and AI. “Books are written by human authors and must be translated by human translators to preserve the artistic virtues of the literary work,” it said in response to questions. “We firmly believe that authors, performers and creative workers must have the right to decide whether their works can be used by generative AI and, if they consent, to be fairly remunerated.”
