On the occasion of International Translation Day, the Turkish Translators’ Association (ÇEVBİR), in cooperation with Translation and Interpreting Association Turkey (Çeviri Derneği) and the Association of Publishers in Turkey (YAYBİR) will organise a meeting on 30 September in Istanbul.

This year, for the eighth time, the Warsaw branch of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture), the European Commission Representation in Poland, and the Polish Literary Translators Association will host an event for International Translation Day – a holiday celebrated worldwide every 30 September, the Feast Day of St. Jerome (author of the first translation of the Bible into Latin, and patron saint of translators). The goal of the event is to draw attention to the essential role of translators in the reception of foreign literature and culture and to make readers aware that translators are, through their work, co-authors of world literature. Turkish translator Necmiye Alpay (70) unjustly imprisoned without trial

On 31 August 2016, Turkish translator, editor, critic, author and linguist Necmiye Alpay (70) was arrested. Alpay is a member of the Turkish Association of Translators (ÇEVBİR).

Alpay received her BA degree from Ankara University, and her Ph.D. degree from Paris University at Nanterre. She has translated numerous works into Turkish, including those of Said, Girard, Ricoeur and Marchand. Moreover, she has devoted much of her efforts to improving the quality of written Turkish, and has penned several books on the subject. Alpay has also worked as an editor for various periodicals, and has contributed regularly to several newspapers. […]

Major presence of Polish translators at Warsaw Book Fair (19-22 May 2016)

From 19 to 22 May the Warsaw Book Fair was held at the National Stadium in Warsaw. The Polish Literary Translators’ Association has already co-hosted events at the Fair in the past and this year the association had an even stronger presence.

On 19 May the Jerome Lion award ceremony took place. The first ever trophy, awarded to a publisher for supporting literary translators was presented to Wydawnictwo Czarne. Justyna Czechowska, the chair of the award committee, also talked to Monika Sznajderman, head of Wydawnictwo Czarne, about the publisher’s collaboration with translators. […]

Groundbreaking contractual agreement with independent publishers in Italy

On 3rd April 2016 a groundbreaking document was signed between ODEI (the Italian Observatory of Independent Publishers), STRADE (the Italian Union of Translators working in the publishing industry), and the SLC-CGIL (Italian Union of Communication Workers, which STRADE is joining to represent translators). These associations signed a code of practice for a fair relationship between publishers and translators. The code provides a series of guidelines: ‘Five Points for a Fair, Legal and Transparent Translation Contract’. […]

This year’s book festival, which closed on Sunday 24 April at Millennáris, featured a hugely successful and varied programme from the Hungarian Literary Translators’ Association MEGY .

For the first time two auditorium talks were presented. Ádám Nádasdy, drawing a crowd as always, gave a presentation on translating the new Hungarian edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Mónika Mesterházi hosted the second panel discussion with translators of Hungarian texts into other languages. Éva A. Dobos, Ágnes Járfás and Ottilie Mulzet discussing their translations of Szilárd Borbély’s Hungarian novel Nincstelenek into Norwegian, French and English, respectively. […]

On December 11, in Museo ABC in Madrid, Celia Filipetto was awarded the tenth Esther Benítez Prize in the presence of Manuel Rico, President of ACE (Spanish Authors Association), and Carlos Fortea, President of ACE Traductores (Spanish Literary Translators Association). She was given the award for Las deudas del cuerpo (Lumen), her outstanding translation into Spanish of Storie di chi fugge e di chi resta by Elena Ferrante (Edizioni E/O). […]
