Literary translators don’t exist. That’s what you’d often think from looking at the press, book reviews, book covers… You’d think books are magically written in all sorts of languages at the drop of a hat. Shakespeare wrote his sonnets in English, but they are read all over the world in Russian, German, Swedish, Catalan… So literary translators do exist. Help make us visible!
CEATL (http://www NULL.ceatl NULL.eu), the European Council of Literary Translators’ Associations, is calling on amateur photographers to create sparky and clever photographs reflecting the existence and importance of literary translators, their challenges, and their role in literature. Any topic can be used, as long as it is in some way related to literary translation. One digital picture per participant will be accepted, and a 200 Euro voucher for dinner and books will be awarded for the winner before International Translation Day, 30 September 2015.
After the enthusiastic response to our previous ‘Spot the translator’ video contest (http://www NULL.ceatl NULL.eu/words-travel-worlds-winner-of-ceatls-third-international-video-contest-spot-the-translator-2), CEATL hopes that this new photo contest will appeal to many budding photographers!
Contest rules:
– 300 dpi digital photographs (2-3 MB) are accepted.
– All entries shall be submitted to contest@ceatl.eu (contest null@null ceatl NULL.eu) before 1 September 2015.
– Only one picture per participant is allowed.
– If the photo features any text in a language other than English or French, this text must be translated into English and/or French.
– CEATL reserves the right to use the winning photograph to promote literary translators, for instance, as the image for CEATL’s Translation Day postcard. It is understood that the winner will give permission for their photo to be used for that purpose. Should CEATL wish to use other photographs for promotional purposes, the permission of the artist/artists shall be requested. CEATL will not pass the photographs to any third parties other than CEATL member associations. CEATL will not use the photographs for economic profit.
– CEATL will post all the contest pictures to an open Facebook event page (http://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/events/144804399036962) where everybody can ‘like’ their favorite one.
– The CEATL jury will consider the ten photographs with most ‘likes’ (by 10 September 2015), and will choose a winner from among them.
– CEATL member associations will exhibit the photos and may organize press conferences promoting the winning photograph.
– The winner will be announced on 16 September 2015, and awarded a prize of a 200 Euro voucher for dinner and books.
– Offensive pictures will be removed from the contest. The jury has the right not to award the prize, or to split it between two participants in the event of a tie. The jury will not enter into correspondence (or any other contact) with participants about its decision.
