The Hungarian Translators’ Association mourns the death of its president, Professor István Géher. Poet, literary translator, essayist, critic, eminent Shakespeare scholar and Professor Emeritus at the Budapest University of Arts, Professor Géher died on 11 June, at the age of 72. Among others he translated works of Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney and William Faulkner. After decades of exploring and performing close readings of William Shakespeare’s oeuvre, he published his enlightening Shakespeare Reader, Our Image in 37 Plays. Professor Géher’s legendary university seminars inspired generations of literary students and translators as well as younger poets.
A month before his death he opened the vocational convention of the Hungarian Translators’ Association where the following video was made.
