The Brockway Prize, a two-yearly prize for translators of Dutch poetry, is being awarded to Spanish translator Francisco Carrasquer Launed. The prize (5.000 euro) is an initiative of the Nederlands Letterenfonds (Dutch Foundation for Literature), and funded by a legacy of the late James Brockway, himself a poet and translator of Dutch poetry. Every two years the prize is awarded to a translator from a different language.

Poet and translator Francisco Carrasquer Launed (1915) translated the work of a large number of Dutch poets, amongst others Gerrit Achterberg, Martinus Nijhoff, Lucebert en Remco Campert. In 1960, he was awarded the prestigious Martinus Nijhoff Prize for his comprehensive overview Antologia de poetas holandese contemporáneos. The Brockway jury was not only impressed by the number of works translated by Carrasquer Launed, but also by ‘his command of both classic and modern Spanish, the richness of his vocabulary, his sense of metre and rhyme, and his creativity’.
