Georgi Gospodinov and his translators at the Strasbourg Conference
22 Oct, 2024

The European Conference on Literary Translation opened on 2 October 2024 with a literary evening featuring the Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov and his translators: Magdalena Pytlak (Polish), Milena Selimi (Albanian), Angela Rodel (English) – co-winner of the Booker Prize International – Marie Vrinat-Nikolov (French) and María Vútova (Spanish).

Cécile Deniard welcomed the assembled company before giving the floor to Francesca Novajra, president of CEATL, followed by Anne Mistler, deputy mayor of Strasbourg in charge of arts and culture, and Nicolas Georges, head of books and reading at the Ministry of Culture.

Then, our guest of honour, Georgi Gospodinov, co-winner of the Booker Prize International 2023 for Time Shelter (Weidenfeld & Nicolson), gave a talk entitled “Translation – Towards the Shore of Yet Another Tomorrow” – a beautiful text which we invite you to read here –, before a wonderful discussion with his translators concluding with a memorable polyphonic reading that truly gave voice to the diversity of European languages.

The discussion took place in Bulgarian and was translated into French and English by the interpreters Clarissa Worsdale, Nicolas Guittoneau, Stefka Ivanova and Tzena Mileva.
